Indications/Uses
Type 2 DM when dietary modification has failed in adequate glycemic control.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Initially 1-2 mg once daily. Max starting dose: Not >2 mg. Maintenance dose: 1-4 mg once daily. Max: 8 mg once daily. After reaching 2 mg, increments should be not >2 mg at 1-2 wk intervals based on blood glucose response.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Diabetic ketoacidosis w/ or w/o coma.
Special Precautions
Mild to moderate hepatic & renal impairment. Not to be given during pregnancy & lactation. Childn. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Hypoglycemia, GI disturbances eg, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea & constipation.
Drug Interactions
Potentiated hypoglycemic action w/ NSAIDs & other highly protein bound drugs eg, salicylates, sulfonamides, chloramphenicol, coumarin derivatives, probenecid, MAOIs, & β-adrenergic blocking agents. Reduced hypoglycemic effect w/ thiazides & other diuretics, corticosteroids, phenothiazines, estrogens, OCs, nicotinic acid, sympathomimetics, thyroid hormones & INH.
